MUSICAL THEATRE VOCAL PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP

Are you:


  • An actor who longs to sing?
  • A singer yearning to act?
  • New to musical theatre? 
  • A seasoned stage veteran? 


Then this workshop is for you!


Participants will:

  • Learn or review the basics of vocal anatomy and technique.
  • Develop their technique through musical theatre repertoire, carefully selected with Prof. Ciavaglia to suit your voice, spanning from its origins through the present day.
  • Work in small groups, in a collegial and supportive atmosphere, rehearsing and performing solos, duets, and ensembles.
  • Perform in a culminating event, polishing selected repertoire for performance or future audition.


This workshop will be conducted in a hybrid IN-PERSON and ONLINE FORMAT: 

  • In-person seminar instruction and performance review in CNS 15
  • ONLINE SINGING via Zoom
  • Special instruction for online singing technique
  • ONE-ON-ONE feedback 
  • This hybrid format ensures the health, and well-being of all

The Workshop meets ten Friday afternoons, 3:30-6:30 PM: 

September 11, 18, 25 October 2, 9, 16, 30 November 6, 13, 20

20-student maximum, spots are going fast!

As with all our for-credit practicum workshops, regular attendance and full participation is expected, and a short reflection paper will be due following its completion. 



About our Prof:

Michael A. Ciavaglia, DMA, conductor and vocal coach, is active at the professional, university, and community worlds. He has taught at Fairfield since 2006, both in the classroom and vocal studio. Dr. Ciavaglia has produced solo and vocal group recitals which have included a wide variety of repertoire. His approach to vocal training includes a firm grounding in the basics that he applies throughout genres and styles. He has served as a musical consultant for Theatre Fairfield, and has maintained a long-time association with the Fairfield University Glee Club, conducting the ensemble at home, in the region, and abroad, and serving as a vocal technician. He has also given private instruction in conducting, choral methods, and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). In the professional sphere, Dr. Ciavaglia has served on the music/coaching staffs of companies including the Cincinnati Opera, the Asheville Lyric Opera, and On Site Opera in New York City. With the Asheville Lyric Opera, he conducted the premiere of When Adonis Calls, by New York composer Clint Borzoni, with words by John de los Santos. With On Site Opera, where he is chorus master, he has cast and prepared a chorus of individuals who have experienced homelessness for their annual productions of Amahl and the Night Visitors at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. Dr. Ciavaglia’s degrees in conducting and vocal performance are from Temple University in Philadelphia, and the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati.
