Theatre Fairfield will continue its 2020-2021 season with “Director’s Cut,” a series of one-act plays staged by advanced directing students. Each Director will present their own unique production in a live-streamed virtual environment.

“Director’s Cut” marks the directing debut of advanced theatre students who are tackling five short plays dealing with different situations grounded in human connection. The plays include Hot Wax, in which the sale of a silk scarf quickly becomes something more, directed by Kiersten Bjork ’21; The Competent Heart, where bookstore banter takes on a new level of meaning, directed by Tracy Ferguson ’22; Talking About It, the story of what might be the very last cup of coffee between friends, directed by Carlin Fournier ’22; Contact, which follows an astronaut alone and adrift in space, directed by Park Lytle ’21; and Undress Me Clarence, the results of a quirky request at a bar, directed by Jay Martins ’22.

“I really hope that the audience connects with all of the relationships and emotions in each of these plays” Ferguson said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to tell such a beautiful story about such real people.” Fournier agreed, and described his show as “a beautiful conversation between friends that covers everything from friendship to death.” Regarding his production, Lytle said, “Contact is a show that I’m hoping will really connect with audiences’ insecurities and struggles. The situation is very extravagant, but the core themes are ones we can all relate to.” Martins added that his production is perhaps more lighthearted than those of his peers, and that “Undress Me Clarence is a search for passion and human connection between a couple that goes beyond the confines of a play, and will leave audiences full of laughter.” Bjork described her show as “bringing to light the necessity of human connection as a jumping-off point for healing and dealing with the troubles that plague us,” before concluding that “The plays we’ve compiled for Director’s Cut cover a broad range of topics and themes, and yet they are all rooted in the necessity and value of human connection.”

The “Director’s Cut” cast features Chloe Cofini ’24, Madelyn Dutilly ’22, Kierstin Jones ’21, Grace Kavulich ’22, Emily Sheridan ’24, Danielle Sondgeroth ’22, and Catherine Zarrella ’24, as well as guest artists Jerome Francisco, Emily Ramsey ’20, and Fallon Sullivan ‘20.

Our Dramaturgy Production Intern Kierstin Jones '21 spoke with all five directors about their directorial process as well as other elements vital to their productions. She shares excerpts from those interviews below.
