Theater Education Workshop
Educational Theatre Internship Program

We launched a new Educational Theatre Internship Program in Summer-Fall 2018 that offers hands-on experience teaching theatre in K-12 schools. Dr. Jennifer Katona, an outstanding 1998 graduate of our program, founded and chairs the Master’s Program in Educational Theatre at City College of New York, CUNY, and she has returned to Fairfield as mentor. Two theatre majors—Elliot Harrell, ’20, and Kierstin Jones, ’21―are studying educational theatre theory and praxis with Dr. Katona here and at City College, where they engage with graduate students who are beginning their theatre work in New York City public schools. Elliot and Kierstin also are conducting workshops on campus with Bridgeport Refugee Students brought to campus through the Jesuit University Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN) and at Harding High School in Bridgeport to introduce both theatre studies and background information on Theatre Fairfield’s production of Silent Skyby Lauren Gunderson in anticipation of the 9th-grade students’ trip to see the show on Friday, October 26.We are following Dr. Katona’s successful pilot project in Fall 2017 when she prepared 11th-grade students at Bassick High School in Bridgeport to see Theatre Fairfield’s production of Sophocles’s Antigone. The program is generously underwritten by Fiona Garland, a local advocate for theatre education in the schools.
Elliot Harrell, Dr. Jennifer Katona, and Kierstin Jones arrive at City College of New York for their first graduate class.
